Metaverse: The Future of Digital Marketing

Metaverse: The Future of Digital Marketing

What is the Metaverse?

If you have been on the internet a lot, you definitely have come across the term “metaverse”. Since Mark Zuckerberg introduced Meta as the new company brand that brings together all the apps and technologies of what Facebook Inc. was, it gave everyone a glimpse of what the trajectory of the digital space will be in 5-10 years time.

The Metaverse is dubbed by many as the “future of the internet” as it allows people to access a virtual universe where you can freely create your own space and bring your physical world experiences with you. The possibilities are endless with this phenomenon as it for sure perked up everyone’s interest from individuals to businesses worldwide.

The Metaverse is aiming to cover everything in real life, but online. Ranging from entertainment, education, gaming, travels, and for businesses especially, sales and commerce. With the pandemic, travel has not necessarily been back to the way it was yet. With Metaverse, you don’t need to buy a ticket and fly across the world, just put on your VR glasses, and you will be with them in your digital space, or maybe a virtual immersion event -like a music festival!

This project is exciting for individuals who work from home or study online as Meta is planning to improve online interaction between people such as your workmates and classmates as if you are in your offices or schools in person.

An easy way to explain how the Metaverse works is by relating it to popular movies like Ready Player One and The Matrix. The characters in these movies explore a virtual world with the use of advanced technology like VR headgears.

Digital Marketing in the Metaverse

Incorporating virtual reality within digital marketing will open up numerous opportunities. As a digital marketing agency, we don’t rule out certain types of advertising as it depends on the needs of the business. However, as the world becomes more digital, it is more noticeable that a number of advertising tactics and platforms will become obsolete with time.

Virtual reality will allow both businesses and consumers to have a more convenient interaction with each other as it speeds up procedures enabling transactions to be more efficient. One of the businesses that will benefit from this is real estate. Agents will be able to make virtual showings and visits of different properties to clients without the need to meet in person. This eliminates delaying variables such as time, distance, traffic, or how a certain property looks like in the day or at night.

One of the first things that comes up in people’s minds when it comes to Metaverse is gaming. Video game companies, with the pandemic and the rise in popularity of esports, have risen to one of the highest value companies in the world. It has brought different industries to do projects together.

Fortnite, one of the most famous games played by Gen Z, made a collaboration with a few singers like Ariana Grande for a virtual concert to an audience of millions of people.  Balenciaga, a high fashion brand, staged its dystopian autumn/winter 2021 runway show with the use of Oculus virtual reality glasses and also released a video game called Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow.

Roblox is another online video game that has ventured towards virtual reality events like having a concert as well with a rapper/singer, Lil Nas X. Video game studio Dubit has also collaborated with Roblox and will host the first esports league in the Metaverse with funding that has reached US$8 million.

Challenges in the Metaverse

The Metaverse ensures a promising future for individuals and businesses alike, but these challenges are inevitable and contingency tactics must be learned.

  • The Metaverse is still at its early stages as this is a massive project even with numerous big companies that are investing in a similar technology as well. Mark Zuckerberg says that it could take up several years for the main features of this venture to become mainstream.
  • The Metaverse is gaining popularity but not everyone has access to gadgets needed and new technology still needs to be created. However, some technology necessary for it are already available such as high-speed internet, VR headsets, and online worlds that are commonly used in gaming.
  • Data privacy and security is also a concern in the Metaverse. With new technology introduced, evolved security measures must also be created.
  • Not everyone has figured out Metaverse’s value with the misconceptions surrounding its announcement. Both individuals and businesses might still be hesitant and not take the risk just yet.

When Facebook launched in 2004, no one would have thought the magnitude of its impact today. It has certainly changed the way people connect and it extended onto businesses as well. Apps like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp (which we offer services for) has influenced billions around the world. With Meta and the Metaverse, the move beyond 2D screens to a more interactive experience such as augmented and virtual reality will define the future of digital society.
